66. The Estoril Diaries: Day 5

The Estoril Ultimatum

Today is quarter finals day in Estoril. The most anticipated match of the day – and probably the week – sees Nick Kyrgios and Borna Coric go head to head for the first time in their careers. Both are part of the ATP’s #NextGen campaign (see here) and this should be the first of many meetings.

Kyrgios, who celebrated his 21st birthday two days ago, starts as favourite: the Australian is ranked 20th and, see below, has ten wins against top 20 players in his career. Kyrgios will look to use the considerable weapons of his serve and groundstrokes.

Borna Coric, the Croatian teenager, has been ranked around 40 for the last 9 months, and is ranked higher than Kyrgios was at the same age. He has four top 20 wins in his career but none in the last 11 months. Coric will look to stand on the baseline, take the ball early, and disrupt Kyrgios’s rhythm.

Vamos.
